I've Got Valid Reasons

Lately, some of my friends have asked about my blog.  Why haven't you been writing?  When are you going to update your blog?  I need a laugh.

Believe it or not, I've got very valid reasons.  I could use the ol' I've-been-so-busy excuse, but no one wants to hear that.  So what if I have two kids who are involved in everything available in the tri-state area.  I've got time while they're sleeping, right?  Or I could always blame it on the gazillion hours spent, either physically or mentally, on my day job.  But I've been teaching for awhile now, and it's never gotten in the way.  I suppose I could blame it on politics and the exorbitant amount of time it consumes of my day.  That's a straight up lie, though.  I hate them all and have completely lost interest.  To be honest, I just couldn't figure out why I felt like I didn't have time for my blog.

So I decided to inventory my day...  Apparently, I've been spending all my blogging time on some very important stuff.  Why else would I neglect it so?  That's when it occurred to me just how I spend my time.  I, indeed, have been very busy.  Doing important stuff.  When I finally upgraded my phone, the Apocalypse did not happen as many thought would be the case.  Thank God 'cause things could be real bad right now.

Instead, I've become an integral part of the farming community.  And the zoological society.  Oh, and the owner of a very lucrative pet shop/bakery.

Uuuuggghhh...  I've gotten myself into mess.  I'm addicted.  I have to admit it.  Crazy lady here.  I know.

But you should see my zoo!  It's awesome.  I probably have over 100 animals!  I'm constantly adding new exhibits.  In fact, there's a new section under construction as I type.

And my pet shop, too.  I'm not a big fan of cats and fish, but I have an extensive collection of dogs.  The breeding is coming along nicely, too.

While my bakery is a bit small, it has a nice ambiance.  I'm a master chef and have received awards for my strawberry cakes and croissants.  I'm quite the generous gift-giver, too.  I like to visit my neighboring bakeries to tip the wait staff.

But I'm most proud of my farm.  It's adorable.  I have a nice house with a pond in the backyard.  And I'm making a killin' on soybeans and cotton.  I am diligent about watering my crops as well as those of my neighbors.  Yes it's time-consuming, but I'm quite proud of the booming business I've created.

I. AM. A. LOSER!  Really...

Oh, gotta go.  My white truffles are ready, and I've got a sick giraffe.

The Dreaded List of 2012 Goals

It's that time of year again.  I'm having severe anxiety attacks.  I'm so anxious because I don't want to be a failure. again. like every. single. year.  Since I became aware of this whole freakin' New Year's resolution.  Last year, I just said "screw it," but this year I'm feeling like I should actually try to do something.  Or maybe stop doing something.

Ahhh, I dunno.  I have such a shitty track record for goal setting and reaching said goals.  I'm a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants type of girl.  Always have been.  Consequently, I know nothing about sticking it out until I achieve something.  At least, not anything super challenging.  Yes, I graduated college.  Yes, I got a Master's degree but that was only because I didn't want to leave my boyfriend.  Yes, I even completed the additional 30 hours necessary for my next pay level.  But those were easy goals.  School, I like.  Learning, I like.  And while I'm no Albert Einstein, I'm pretty freakin' smart.  For a Mississippi girl.  *insert lame Southern joke here*

Deprivation and self-control, not so much.  I am over the top and excessive.  I like stuff!  And the more that I have, the better I feel.  I like food.  Good food.  Food that has 800 calories in the smell alone.  Drinking?  I am balls-to-the-wall, let's get shit-faced!  That's why I don't drink anymore.

Yep, Excess should have been my middle name.  I don't do well without.  I want what I want, and I want it now!

But, just for shits and giggles, I'm going to give this resolution thing another shot.  Here goes.  I'm putting it out there.  Ya ready???  Wait for it, wait. for. it...

My 2012 goals are to:

  1. lose 40 pounds by my tenth wedding anniversary in August.  That is eight months.  That's like 5 pounds a month.  I can do that, can't I?
  2. start running again and run some local 5Ks for charity starting with the Jason Culley Mido-What? race in March.  I really want to run the St. Jude half marathon next December, but we'll see.
  3. Quit spending money!  Well, maybe not totally.  But at least work with my husband to work out a viable budget.
  4. Be nicer.  Well...  Don't expect much.  I said nic-ER.  Since nice is not my best feature, anything will be an improvement.

Alright folks.  I put it out on the blogosphere so it's official!  I have to accomplish them.  Or the cyber police will come knocking on my door to take me to cyber jail.  I think it's in Narnia.  The White Witch is the warden.  Or something crazy like that.

ADD Moment #477 - Dude, have you ever seen that documentary about the harshest prison in the world??  It is some joint down in the middle of Mexico.  It's basically an enclosed city run by the criminals!  You do NOT want to go there!

My Girl, Barbie

When I was a little girl, I loved Barbie.  Everything Barbie!  I was so jealous of my sister one Christmas because she, who was totally into baby dolls, got THE Barbie airplane!

Really, Santa?!?!  She doesn't even like Barbie that much.  Every time I try to play with her, she strips off all of Barbie's clothes and just won't play right!

I was pissed.  And green with envy.  Lucky for me, though, my sister wasn't stingy like moi.  While it wasn't technically my Barbie airplane, I had full access to it.  Thank you, Jesus!

Though my parents never could afford that Barbie Dream House, I loved all the things I had that were adorned with the always famous Barbie logo.  I even got Barbie skates one year!

Which is exactly why I was freakin' stoked when my daughter's letter to Santa contained these words:  I want some Barbies and a Barbie house for Christmas, please.  Hot dog!  Mama's getting...um, well...I mean...G is getting Barbies for Christmas!

Because G's  interest in Barbie is fairly a new phenomena, I didn't go apeshit over the Barbie gear.  Besides, that little Christmas list also included a 4-wheeler and an iPod Touch.  My kids are spoiled, but I couldn't convince my husband bring myself to spend fifty grand on Christmas this year.  Luckily, my husband's step-mother (NO, not the infamous bitch known as the MIL from Hell) gave her new Barbie dolls.  Santa got the Barbie Vacation House.

Wooo Hooo!!!  Did I tell you how freakin' excited I was about the Barbie stuff?!?!?!

Fast forward to Christmas morning.  There I was in the middle of the living room putting together all the gifts from Santa.  Just like every Christmas morning.  My job.  Because Mr. OCD tends to lose his shit and break all the little parts by forcing them into the wrong places!  And because I am a glutton for punishment, I found myself, once again, in Lego Hell.  Yes, as in previous years, my son requested Legos.  He loves Legos.  As long as someone else puts them together.  That someone was ME!  AGAIN!

After several hours of tedious Star Wars battleship building, I was rescued by the Barbie Vacation House.  Mama, will you put my Barbie house together?!?

Yes!  Time to play Barbies!

First off, those instructions.  Phew!  The tiniest print I have ever seen.  It took me a moment to realize that I was initially following the French instructions.  It didn't matter, though.  The English version was just as bad.  Can we say, Mama needs some glasses???

After struggling a bit, it was finally together.  Correctly.  Time for stickers and even smaller instructions.  Great...

While I'm going through the house applying stickers, I notice a disturbingly common theme among them.  Picture of Barbie partying with friends on the frame.  Check!  Blender in the kitchen.  Check!  Bar.  Bar stools.  Check!  Wine glasses.  Chips and other appetizers.  Bottles of pink bubbly...

Wait a damn minute.  What the...  *light bulb*

Barbie is a freakin' party girl!  This vacation home is nothing more than a trap house with nice furnishings!  Barbie and her girls and Ken are damn lushes.  No wonder she has that sleeping mask.  It's the keep the disco lights from disrupting her sleep once she passes out!

OMG!  And why am I letting my daughter play with this stuff?  Luckily, we don't have alcohol in our house so she doesn't know what those wine bottles represent.  She's only five!

Then I thought, is this why I loved Barbie so much?  Or worse, did I become a party girl as a result of my obsession with all things Barbie????

Holy crap!  I smell class-action lawsuit!  Can you imagine the generations of warped women who started out with a healthy love for Barbie?  Lindsay Lohan?  Britni Spears?  Andy Dick?

I'm no rocket scientist, but it certainly makes me think WTF?!

Letter to the Dad in the Blue Ford

Dear Daddy in the blue Ford,

First let me say, I am a product of the 60s.  I started my driving career in the 80s when seat belts were options for which only the fancy folks paid when purchasing a car.  If I actually rode in a vehicle with a seat belt, those things were buried deep down in the crevices of the pleather seating.  Inoperable.  Caked with catsup and half-eaten suckers.  And if it did just happen to jut out from between the seats, you risked anal injury by sitting on it.

Unfortunately, though, times have changed.  I guess the transportation department got tired of cleaning the body parts off the pavement.  Regardless of the pivotal factors, seat belts are the law now.  And car seats for children are too...  They won't let you leave the hospital with a newborn without passing inspection.  It's kind of a big deal.  Kids have to be locked down in the back seat until they are practically old enough to have hair under their armpits.  Just try passing the crossing guard in the parent pickup lane with an unsecured child...

Which brings me to my point.  Shut up.  I realize I just wrote an entire book to get to my little point.  That's how I roll.  Your six year old son really should not be riding in the front seat without a seat belt.  Sitting in the front at that age is really pushing it, but I will entertain it.  However without a seat belt is just totally unacceptable.  The sight of him sitting up next to the dashboard just scared the bu-jeezes out of me.  I had a severe panic attack just thinking about you slamming on brakes and him flying through the windshield.  Especially considering that you were TEXTING THE ENTIRE TIME!!!

Two-handed texting.  Knee steering.  In the stop and go holiday traffic.  If I was your wife, I'd beat you to death with a baseball bat.  Dead.  Then hang your ass by the balls from a flagpole at the next Mother's Against Destructive Decisions meeting.

Are you effin' stupid?!?!?  God knows I love to text.  I am a texter.  Texting is the greatest invention since the internet.  Seriously.  No one hates talking on the phone more than me.  I don't want to chit chat about your sinus infection or your husband's hemorrhoids.  I totally get the desire to text.  I even understand the need to text while driving.  Guilty as charged.  But come on, Dude...  Both hands?!?!  In heavy traffic???  There is nothing that damn important.

If I catch you riding around town with your kid hanging from the oh-shit bar while you are texting, I'm calling the Po-Po.  Period.  You can choose to ride without a seat belt.  Hell, you can even choose to text and drive.  Your kid, though?  His life is in your hands.  Don't make me have to whip your ass for harming him.

Sincerely,

The Nosey Mom in the Right Lane

Just a Little Word about "Personal Space"

As many of you may know, I am the queen of Zumba.  The queen of Zumba who hasn't lost an ounce although she's been busting her butt for nearly a year, but the queen nonetheless.  Lately, though, I must confess that my attendance has been less than stellar.  Holidays and all...  Plus the fact that I HAVEN'T LOST AN OUNCE as of yet, but it's all about being healthy.  Right????  Bullshit!

So there I was last night.  In Zumba.  Minding my own business.  I was running a little late so I didn't get my usual spot.  No biggie; I got one close by.  Since I'm short and the instructor is too, I try for the front of the room.  Besides, in this particular class the crowd seems to gravitate towards the back of the room.  Since I often get claustrophobic in confined spaces, it's a win-win.  Right?!?!  I have plenty of workout area.  Normally.

Maybe I was just feeling overly irritated because I was in a rush.  Maybe I just woke up on the wrong side of the bed yesterday.  Maybe my Zoloft dosage needs to be increased.  Or just maybe someone needs to think twice about encroaching on my effn' personal space.

Chicky rubbed me the wrong way from get-go.  I don't know why, but I decided that we weren't going to be best workout buddies from the moment I laid eyes on her.  I'm sure she's a lovely young lady.  Sweet and considerate.  Damn-near Mother Theresa-ish.  However, she was wearing skin tight blue jeans (camel toes and all), furry boots, and forty pounds of make up.  This is Zumba, heifer.  Not the club!  That's not all.  She was also sporting a tight low-cut tee with, get this, a regular freakin' bra!  Underwire and cleavage all over the joint.  Now do you see why I had the bad vibes??

Lucky for me, the only place left in the room was directly in front of Miss T-Pain girl.  Fine.  She's seems to be hanging towards the back with the other newbies.  I'll be fine.  So I thought...  Hell to the effn' NO!  Sister had about as much rhythm as a 3-legged elephant.  She was all over the damn places.  Legs and arms flailing around like a Pentecostal at a revival.  All she needed to do was start speaking in tongues and I would have gotten the heck out of dodge.

Instead, all I could do was be extremely annoyed.  Instead of flailing around in the back, somehow she'd worked her way up to where I was standing.  Two inches away!  I could count the beads of sweat hanging from her clumped mascara.

At one point, I looked to find her standing right in front of me.  "How the hell did she do that??" I thought.  If it wasn't so damn annoying, it might have been funny as hell.  But I was irritable.  I wanted to kick her.  Hard.  Push her out of my way.  Out.Of.My.Space.DAMMIT!  Please!

Lord, I hope she's not there tomorrow night.  I'm not sure I can show as much restraint.
Not her, but you get the picture...

Why We Will Not Be Watching "The Regular Show" Anymore

First of all, as you may know, I suck as a mother.  I don't really monitor what my children watch on T.V.  I figure as long as it's some cartoon channel, it must be okay for children to watch.  In addition, our television is on one of said cartoon channels from the time we wake in the morning until we go to bed.  Except during homework time.  I'm not a serial killer, for crying out loud!  Even I have my limits.

Today, I'm taking a stand as a mother, and I'm setting some new limits.  No more of "The Regular Show" at my house.  Period.  If you aren't familiar, it's one of those goofy, boy-type shows on Cartoon Network.  To be honest, I've never watched it for more than a minute or so.  I'm just not interested.  Weird animal-like people in weird situations making underwear jokes just doesn't appeal to me.  Sorry, I should have been more concerned with my kid's well-being than myself.  My bad.

Anyshutyourdamnmouth, why the ban against "The Regular Show," you ask??  Well, today I took my kids to our local pottery painting establishment.  I figured, it's raining, they are making me nuts with all the fighting, hey...let's go out in public and let them drive someone else crazy for awhile!  Sounds like a plan!

As is typical, my kids grab several pieces of the more outrageously expensive junk pottery.  Christmas gifts for Mom and Dad.  Yippee, honey!  You're getting a black football helmet bank, and I'm getting an orange and yellow squirrel!!  Oh, and our Christmas tree will be adorned with their newest additions - an orange and red star and a purple and black peace sign.  Exquisite!

My son, being the first born perfectionist, when all out...at first.  He grabbed 47 different paint pots and 4 brushes.  He had a plan, and he was ready to roll.  However, Messy Marvin got some blue paint where he meant to put orange.  He went apeshit.  "I'm screwed; I'm screwed!"

Did I hear myself correctly??  He's six.  "Um, E.  What was that?  What's the matter?"

"Mom, I got the blue all over the orange and now I'm totally screwed."

*blink blink*

"E, do you know what that means?"

"No, I just heard it on 'The Regular Show'!"

And that, my dear friends, is why the LB home is boycotting "The Regular Show."  My kids will be getting their potty mouths from me, thank you very much!

My Sister, My Friend

It's been awhile since I've had time for my "therapy" also known as my blog.  Today, though, I need it.  Desperately.

For on this day, November 19th, in 1993, my life was changed forever.  Eighteen years ago I lost a piece of me.  The piece of me that always served as a reminder for me not to take myself or life so seriously.  My sister.  My wild and adventurous little sister.

I remember it just like it was yesterday down to what I was wearing at the time.  A black suit.  I'd gone for drinks and a quasi date after work.  We were partying when I got the call.  Well, this was before I actually had a cell phone.  My date, however, did have one, and my friend called him.  Funny, though...I cannot remember his name to save my life.

Any way, he was very sweet and handled the situation well.  He told me that we had to leave the club because his brother needed him.  Of course being the consummate party girl, I told him to just leave me there.  It is too early!  I can just find a ride home with someone else! Yes, I was a jerk, but that's not even the worst of it.

He was persistent, though, and practically dragged me out of the bar.  Once in the car, he told me that his brother had gotten into some trouble and he needed to go take care of things.  That's when I started blabbing on and on about how my sister was always in trouble and how my parents and I were always bailing her out of some situation.  I told him about the time I drove three hours to Lafayette, Louisiana, to rescue her from a supposedly abusive boyfriend only to have her turn around three hours later and go back to him.  This is reason #47 why Karma continues to bite me in the behind.

As he walked me into my apartment, we could hear the telephone ringing.  I rushed to get it before the person on the other end could hang up.  She didn't.  It was my friend, Amye.

Millie was in a bad car wreck.

What?!?!  Is she okay??!!??

No, she's dead.

Amye, tell me you're kidding.  Tell me this is a very unfunny joke.

No, LB.  She's gone.  She didn't make it.

I don't even remember my date leaving the apartment.  All I remember is wanting to get home to my parents as soon as possible.  But I was drunk, and the drive was six hours.  My mom would not allow me to take a chance and end up in the same place as my sister.

I cried myself to sleep that night.  I got up at the crack of dawn, eyes nearly swollen shut, and a severe headache to remind me of all the beers I drank the night before.  My mind was clear, though.  My sister was gone.  I had to get home to take of her like I always did.

I'd never seen so many people at a funeral in my entire life.  Still, to this day, I don't remember seeing more people at a visitation.  She had so many friends.  My family had so many people who cared about her and about us.  Her poor babies.  They were too young to lose their mom!  Justyn was around nine or ten.  Jade was only five.  And Jerry Michael...her sweet little boy.  He loved his mom, my sister, more than any other person in the world.  The middle child just like her, and they were thick as thieves.  It broke me to see them hurt.

It still hurts me to see how that loss has affected them over the years.  Her kids were my first loves.  I never knew what it felt like to love so much that your heart aches into she brought those three little angels into the world.  I only wish she were hear to feel that same feeling for my kids.  G looks a bit like her.  E has a bubbly personality like her.  Funny how that happens, huh?

When we lost her, our family changed.  Some things for the better.  My dad, who never spoke more than three words per day to me, will now talk to me for hours if I let him.  And we like each other!  Believe it or not, we are so much more like one another than I could ever have imagined.  He's one of the best storytellers you will ever meet.

Some things changed for the worse, though.  My mom was very close to my sister in a completely different way than with me.  Unlike me, my sister had no walls.  My mom could be who she wanted to be around Mimi and vice versa.  I was always the uptight, hard-to-get-along-with daughter seeking perfection.  While my mother and I were close, our closeness was much different.  I think my mom missed that closeness with Mimi until the day she died.  I can just imagine them in heaven together, smiling and laughing.

And for me, the good news is that I don't take myself and life too seriously anymore.  It's just too damn stressful.  My sister taught me that.  Thanks, Mimi!  The bad news is that I feel completely alone sometimes.  Don't get me wrong; I love my brother, and I love my dad.  They mean the world to me, and I'm glad we have each other.  But there is NOTHING like that bond of sisters.  Before she died, she and I had really grown to love each other.  We'd become very good friends.  I remember a cross-stitched picture I made for Mimi.  I gave it to her for Christmas, and made sure they put it in her casket before they buried her.

Our roots say we're sisters,
Our hearts say we're friends.
